So…how do you design your own house?
Here is a list of the 12 steps I take while designing houses. You can call it the "Architect's dozen" really, since I'm giving you a little extra bonus at the end…
- choose the land to build on - check zoning and make sure your lot is "buildable"
- locate the house on the land - consider its micro climate, sun orientation, focus features, obstacles like big rocks or streams
- develop a "program" for the house - how many rooms and what are they
- draw a first sketch - figure the sizes of the rooms and how they relate to each other
- design the rooms themselves - kitchen, bathroom, living spaces, utility rooms
- choose the structure and materials for the house
- design the look and style of the house - facade, roof shape
- electricity, heating and air conditioning, sewer system - the utility systems of the house
- outside features – patios, decks, ponds, sheds, pools
- think landscaping – where to place a garden, ornamental plants and features
- choose the builder or contractor
- create a care and maintenance manual for the house – green and healthy ways
and now a bonus I promised… a few recipes for the housewarming party!
We'll cover "case studies", recommendations for different materials, styles and the latest projects in the blog section.
You'll get to talk to the Engineers and Contractors I work with - I twisted their respective arms to devote some of their precious time to fit you in.
So…if you want a second opinion, a cost quote, or have a general question on your project, please post it in the comment section.
I want to see you design your own house!
